The American Astronomical Society's Division on Dynamical Astronomy (DDA) is pleased to announce that the 2023 Dirk Brouwer Career Award was given to Professor Alessandra Celletti (Universita' di Roma Tor Vergata) to recognize and celebrate her outstanding contributions to the advancement of KAM theory and to the study of regular and chaotic dynamics of Earth’s satellites and space debrisProfessor Celletti has significantly contributed to the development and the analysis of mathematical models describing different problems in Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy, including rotational dynamics, 3-body problems, Lagrangian equilibrium configurations, resonances, orbit determination, low-energy trajectories, and space debris dynamics. She has contributed to making KAM not only a theoretically interesting area but also an applied area, embodied in her influential textbook Stability and Chaos in Celestial Mechanics. Her work has encompassed dynamics of almost all bodies of the solar system, from Mercury, the Moon, asteroids, and Trojans, to the satellites of the outer planets. It is extraordinary to have a person who combines theoretical methods, modeling, and computational techniques into such an influential and effective career.
Prof. Celletti has been involved in many leadership roles within the academia and professional societies as well as with the Italian Space Agency and ANVUR. She has been a key figure in the world of Celestial Mechanics also through her leadership of the flagship journal Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy as Editor-in-Chief. Aside from the CMDA, Prof. Celletti is serving as an Associate Editor for six scientific journals, one popular journal, and the Celestial Mechanics section of Scholarpedia. In addition to her own research and impressive publication record, Professor Celletti has also significantly contributed to the career of many students and young professionals.
Prof. Celletti earned her PhD in mathematics under the joint guidance of Jürgen Moser and Jörg Waldvogel at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland.
Prof. Celletti will be invited to give a lecture at the 55th annual DDA meeting in the spring of 2024.
